View Full Version : Brain Candy... 10 Years Later

It's been over 10 years now since Brain Candy was released in to theatres (april 12th 1996)... and now I am starting to see how "ahead of it's time" this movie is/was.
When it came out I was sixteen and had no clue as to what was happening in the world of "legal" drugs. The movie was dark, slow and revolved around a far-fetched premise (selling a pill that makes people happy!?)
Watching the movie today made me realize how great of a story this movie tells.
Brain Candy is so bang on good.
I think the problem it had with critics and fans 10 years ago was that they wanted it to be a happy swan song movie from the Kids, but they gave audiences something poignant and dark. Expectations were waaaay off.
As for being a light comedy, the movie does not hit. But as for being a smart, satirical movie ... it's fucking great.
I say this now because I think this movie deserves to be recognized for being "ahead of it's time".
Am I preaching to the converted here?
As far as I'm concerned, yes.
I only got into KITH about 3 years ago (despite remembering watching it with my dad when I was a kid) and only saw Brain Candy last year. The film never got pushed here (I'm assuming it was a complete flop in the US too) and not even a DVD was released, but by-gum, I instantly fell in love with that film for all the reasons you listed. I'm not sure I agree that it was 'ahead of its time' though. I don't think it would have done any better today than it did 10 years ago (at the box-office I mean).

"Life is short, life is shit, and soon it will be OVER!!"
Love it! Always have.
And at the time it was about ProzacŪ. There's just more of those kind of drugs available now.

Brain Candy's a great movie.
"IT WAS ONLY A COUPLE OF FLIPPER BABIES!!!"
Ahead of it's time? I don't think so. Prozac's been around since '88.
"...could Van Gough have painted all that stuff?"

I haven't seen the "Strangers w/ Candy" motion picture film, but, based on the fact that I HATED everything after season one, Brain Candy is what Sw/C should have been.
We NEED a PROPER DVD of this cinematic masterpiece!
I NEVER go to the movies. And I NEVER go on dates. This movie, I saw in a theater TWICE. Once on a date that went nowhere. The other time I saw it with a female friend that I ended up dating with disastrous results. I should hate this movie, just because it represents a shitty, shitty time in my life. But this movie transcends that! It's too good to let a couple of bad experiences get in the way of my appreciating it. Then again, maybe I just like it because it reminds me of I time in my life when I could actually GET dates, where I wasn't thought of as "revolting" or "creepy".
Somebody hook me up with some Gleemonex!!

Could someone with more know-how make me an avatar of this Dave Foley Character?

OK, but they're not good.
First, I took a screencap and sized it down using MS Paint:
Then I took another screencap of the little picture in the "related video" section:
And since I was on youtube, I figured I might as well give you a picture of Brookers:
Sorry they're so crappy. I wont' be offended if you don't want to use them. If anything, I'd be glad because I really want to use that Brookers one.
