View Full Version : Do you think anyone could carry Mr. Show

I know David wouldn't do it. But what if Bob started Mr. Show again, who would co-host it. I don't know if Bob would do it again but who would you want to host it

Mitch Hedburg

04-30-2004, 05:48 PM
I could do it. I'd be great.

Kedsie, dumbfuck!

Nah, I'm just fuckin' with ya. But seriously, without David, it's not "Mr. Show"! I mean, imagine if BANDS started pulling that shit! What if Van Halen tried to carry on without David Lee Roth? That would've SUCKED! I'm glad that never happened! Or what if Pink Floyd tried to keep going without Syd Barrett OR Roger Waters??? Can you imagine if some schmuck who wasn't even an original member of the band took over as it's LEADER (as kickass a guitarist as he may be)??? Or what if The Velvet Underground put out an album with NO original members? Shall I go on? Genesis? Judas Priests? Fleetwood Mac? YES??? Good thing none of these bands ever let that sort of thing happen!

Wait a minute... Mitch Hedburg? Funny guy. Don't get me wrong. But can you see him doing CHARACTERS? I mean, he's basically a JOKE teller. He doesn't really get into STORIES in his act, as I recall. That makes me wonder if he's really fit for sketch WRITING. It'd be like Steven Wright doing sketch comedy. Oh FUCK! That's (w)RIGHT!!! He WAS on "The Downer Channel"!!! Remember? With Mary Lynn Rice-Cub??? It was on NBC for about two seconds? How'd I forget THAT???

BUT, let me throw this name out there: Zach Galifianakis. Huh? Maybe?

I'm REALLY curious to see "Next!" though! I wonder if I can download that from somewhere. I think using a different show name and not trying to "replace" David is a much better way to go.

04-30-2004, 07:54 PM
why wouldnt david do it? he does the live stage show still. plus if you listened to the commentaryon the ben stiller show, you'd know bob didnt enjoy mr. show as much as david did.

04-30-2004, 08:44 PM
i think David was pretty much fed up with the whole thing during the last season and beyond ready to move on by the time it was over. But I think the way HBO was treating them was the MAIN issue. Maybe HBO would be ready to treat them better now with the success of their DVDs. I don't know. I mean, "Family Guy" is (supposedly) coming back to Fox in 2005 since they've seen the success of their DVDs and their Adult Swim ratings. But I'm thinking maybe too much time has passed to try and do "Mr. Show" again by that name and in that style. I'm thinking it just wouldn't feel right. Like a few years back when The Beatles cut a couple new songs. There was nothing they could've done at that point that would've really worked. It'd be interesting to see them make another attempt at a feature length film. But maybe "Mr. Show", the series is better left buried in a "time caplet".

You know what they should really do? Hardcore porn! Think about it: Nobody's making porn right now 'cuz they're scared of getting "the hiv"! They could REALLY take advantage of that void! They could make a name for themselves! They could show off some talents that most people don't know they have. For example, I have it on good authority that Brian Posehn is hung like a Pringles can! And John Ennis cums BUCKETS! And B.J. Porter? Tell me THAT's not a porn name! (Either that or a cheesy cop-drama series.)

Or MAYBE they could wait 'til the REAL porn people go back into production and make a shocking behind the scenes documentary for HBO! "America Undercover: The Fluffers"!!!

noone could possibly carry on mr. show without bob and david. I'd like to see robin williams try, however, as i think he has the quick-wittedness and comedic timing to take mr. show in a new direction. as long as he didn't do mrs. doughtfire more than once a show, i think he'd really prove his chops.

i'm a knew member, and it's super cool to meet fellow fands of bob and david. rock on!

04-30-2004, 11:58 PM
Robin Williams is horrible.

05-01-2004, 12:34 AM
I remember a few years back Comedy Central was showing this OLD Robin Williams special. I'm pretty sure it was from HBO, originally. I remember there were a few celebrities in the audience. John Ritter was one. I think there was some chick from "Laugh In". I wanna say Jo Anne Worley, but I could easily be wrong on that. ANYWAY, I remember the audience laughing a lot, but celebrities were into it on a completely different level. It's like they were in AWE! Their mouths were agape and they were shaking their heads in astonishment. It was like they were witnessing the second coming of christ. Except... well, ya know how when you see people on TV getting all into a religious ceremony that you can't understand? They're dancing around with poisonous snakes or falling over when that asshole with the weird hair breathes on them or something? THAT'S what I saw! I was like, "Why are you WORSHIPING this guy? He's CLEARLY coked-up out of his fucking SKULL! This isn't REAL energy! This isn't REAL inspiration! It's all COKE-induced!!!" To be fair, I have seen him be funny. But he's definitely overrated and past his prime, as far as I'm concerned. But hey, you're entitled to your opinion. I guess. :p

05-01-2004, 02:55 AM
first, i hope the Robin Williams thing is a joke, cause he really fucking sucks. secondly, coke is as good a muse as anything else, just ask Belushi...oh, wait, i guess that could be difficult.

as far as a new host, Mark Maron would be a cool choice.

also, i think the new "family guy" will be on Adult Swim.

Ya think? I don't know. I'm not sure they're on the same page. Then again, neither were Bob & David really, which is part of what made it work. Mark is GREAT on Air America, though!!! Have you heard him on there? If you happen to be up early enough one of these (week)days, check him out. He has some cool little bits he does on there regularly. I'm not sure he's really gelling with his co-hosts, though. Not that they're bad. I just get the feeling that the hosts for that and their other morning show were just kind of thrown together and hadn't met before. Hey, ya know who would be a good co-host for Mark? There's this guy, I think his name is Bob Odenkirk! Ever heard of him? He's HiLaRiOuS!!! He does these little movie parodies with thumb puppets! That's some funny-ass shit, man! He does, like, "Friday the THUMB-teenth" and "Top THUMB" and "Deep-THUMB" and "THUMBS in the Hood" and "THUMB-Matrix" and "Schindler's THUMB" and "THUMB-fight at the O.K. Corral" and "The Passion of the THUMB" And "Edward THUMB-THUMBS" and "My Left THUMB" and "Three Men and a THUMB" and ... Okay, I'm out of shit.

I thought it was supposed to go back to Fox. So I looked it up and, based on the stories I saw, it's still kind of up in the air. They're apparently GOING to make new episodes. And those episodes are GOING to be on Cartoon Network at some point. The question is whether or not they're gonna air on Fox first. And frankly it wouldn't surprise me at all to see NONE of this happen. A LOT can change between now and then in the world of TV. Do you have ANY idea how many times I've called up my parents all excited because I was SURE I had a network television gig LOCKED UP? Zero.

05-01-2004, 09:03 AM
David always talked about how he had no work ethic and he wouldn't do it if he had to. But Bob still sounds like he would do it except for the bald cap thing...

05-01-2004, 01:06 PM
No, i haven't heard him on Air America. How early is early? I love his stand-up routine though. Politically he and David seem to be on the same page, and he's always got some good drug humor.

Fucking EARLY! (http://www.airamericaradio.com/pub/globalDefault.htm) 6 to 9 AM, and that's EASTERN!! I'm scared to do the math for other time zones.

05-01-2004, 02:12 PM
you're thinking of steve oderek. he does the thumb puppets. you fuck, you said it was bob. you fuck

Hey, I wonder if he's gonna steal any of my movie parody ideas. He probably SHOULD! These are the REAL ones, I swear to Bob:

Thumb Wars: The Phantom Cuticle
The Blair Thumb
Bat Thumb
The Godthumb

Those are the ones I DIDN'T make up!!! He can't even do fucking PUNS correctly!!! To be fair, I'll admit that I've not seen any of those. They COULD be more or less for kids, but I don't know. I know that's the way I'd handle it if I had to do something like that.

So I was checking out his website so I could be sure I was getting those shitty movie parody titles right and it turns out he IS planning on using one of my ideas!!! I assume he thought of it first, unless he posted it early this morning. But here's the difference: I was TRYING to come up with bad ideas to make him look bad. But look at the real titles! I can't suck that bad when I'm TRYING to suck! Anyway, apparently he plans to do "THUMBATRIX"! I shit you not.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong on this, but I THINK I heard that Steve wrote the original script for the original "Ace Ventura: Pet Detective". As I recall, Jim Carry agreed to do it on the condition that he could change every goddamn word of the script. But if that's the case, why the fuck would they get Steve to do the SEQUEL??? And then to work with Jim Carry AGAIN on fucking "Bruce Almighty"????? Yeah, I know it's all about money. But isn't there something to be said for having a name you can bank on? If an actor is consistently in GOOD movies, people will eventually go see anything he's in. But if he's hit-or-miss, people won't be so eager. Never mind. People are stupid. I know.

I think Bob & Bill Odenkirk should sue Steve Oedekerk (correct spelling) for having a name that's WAY too close to theirs. And maybe Bo Derek could sue him based on the spelling used above by the forum-ite who's name I'm going to intentionally misspell as "T.J. Max". :D

There could never be Mr Show without both Bob and David. End of discussion.

BUT Bob could always do another show with or without David. I've seen Next!, and while it's no Mr Show, I thought it was pretty fucking funny. There's this great bit with Fred Armisen where he interviews Ray Romano and Andy Dick (It's another takeoff of Inside the Actor's Studio) where all he does is insult them. Very funny. Another good one is where and Jerry Minor sings a love ballad to the American flag's "booty" - it's funnier than it sounds.

David Cross was in 2 scenes, one of them a voice over.

It would've been a great show had it been picked up. Oh well.

05-01-2004, 06:24 PM
where and when did you see it? while i'm on the topic, does anyone know a site i can download "the near future" or any of bobs other shows at?

05-02-2004, 12:06 AM
A friend of mine has the two episodes of Next! on tape. I think he got it on E-bay awhile back. So that's how I saw the show. He also has another of Bob's shows, I think it's called Life on Mars. I still haven't seen that one, though.

05-02-2004, 12:58 AM
Yeah, I was gonna bring up "Life on Mars", but I couldn't remember if it had actually gotten MADE or if it only existed on paper somewhere or what. Thanks for letting me know that there IS, in fact, "Life on Mars"!

Take a look at the Lawman
Beating up the wrong guy
Oh man! Wonder if he'll ever know
He's in the best selling show
Is there...

Well, you get the idea. What a GREAT fucking song!!!

One of these days I have to get out to L.A. to catch The Other Channel (http://www.uncabaret.com/other.html) & The Un-Cabaret (http://www.uncabaret.com/)!!! (Sorry about the FUCKING annoying audio on those links that CAN'T BE TURNED OFF, by the way.) That's a long-ass way to go to watch some TV! But the Un-Cab sounds like it kicks ass! Anyone ever listen to that Un-Cab show that used to be on the Comedy World radio network that existed for a couple seconds a few years back? I'm getting way off topic now, but MAN I miss that! They used to have Bob and David and a TON of our other favorites on there! They've got a CD that I should really order, but that's no substitute for being able to hear it for at least an hour (maybe it was more, I can't remember) five nights a week!!! There's a very funny (but very SHORT) clip of Bob from that CD here (http://www.uncabaret.com/cd.html).

05-02-2004, 02:29 AM
It is I JuanBallsac.

I think Mickey Rourke and Chris Penn should be the new faces of Mr.Show.

Additional Cast

Paul Sorvino
Corey Feldman
Warwick Davis
Ally Sheedy
Jason Patrick

Dudley Moore....oops he's a corpse, my bad.

05-02-2004, 02:43 AM
What about Joe Rogan and Doug What's-is-name?

Or Bo & Luke's scab cousins from "The Dukes of Hazard"?

Or Sammy Hagar and Gary What's-is-name?

Or Bush & Cheney?

05-02-2004, 10:05 AM
i think comedy central should re-make the show and place some of the shitty comedians from tough croud on.

05-02-2004, 02:27 PM
Oh, you guys are killing me!

But seriously, though, maybe Comedy Central could buy the rights to run "cleaner" versions of Mr Show, like they did with Kids in the Hall. Then the show could gain a wider audience.

Though the remake with those Tough Crowd assholes sounds like such a great idea...

05-02-2004, 02:28 PM
Oh, and by the way, I have the Uncabaret cd. It's probably no substitute for the real thing, but it's pretty fucking funny. Makes me wish I could be there.

05-02-2004, 03:52 PM
i might do one of her classes within the next year. it depends wether or not i can get some cash

05-03-2004, 01:01 AM
Ya know, when I first saw the title of this thread, "Do you think anyone could carry Mr. Show", before I read the post, I thought the question was going to be whether or not it could be shown on another network or in syndication or something. So I'll just pretend that was the question and address that. I was just watching "Larry Sanders" edited for syndication, and it works to a degree. Just not as well as on HBO. With "Mr. Show", I don't see that working all that well. I think there's only one episode where they show tits (and fucking FAKE ones, unfortunately), and the rest of what little, brief, partial nudity there was was all ass and all male, i think. So that's not MUCH of an issue. But too much would be lost with all the swearing taken out. Obviously it wouldn't be funny for them to just overdub that "mother, father, Chinese dentist" talk over EVERY episode. Or that thing from "The State" where that guy keeps yelling, POOP! over and over at the end. Actually, didn't they do something like that on "SCTV" as well, or am I mistaken? Okay, I'm getting WAY off the rails here. Maybe Comedy Central could show it late at night, uncut, like the "South Park" movie. Bah, who cares? Nobody asked.

05-03-2004, 03:47 PM
That's actually not a bad idea- to show it late, like the South Park movie. But, even an edited version wouldn't be THAT bad. Granted, not as good as the real thing, but the show would gain a wider audience.
