Yeah, I heard about this a little while back. I think I posted something about it, but not in its own thread. Hope it works better than "The Downer Channel".

Hopefully Paul is also a writer on the show. And what is Jay Johnston up to (talent-wise)? Have you heard the Mr. Show commentaries? He's so goddam funny. He should be on more shit.

^ my fifth post!

Yeah, Jay's great. And I'm no queer-mo, but he seems like a decent looking chap as well. It kind of makes me wonder why someone hasn't tapped him to play a leading man type roll in a romantic comedy or something. I can probably answer my own question though:

He's not well known enough for a big studio to take a chance on him
I think most of those rolls are written in one of two voices:

Bill Murray
Adam Sandler
I don't see him being able to take on that style, exactly. Maybe he'd be good in the roll of the guy Sandler wins the girl over from. That's if you wanna get into shitty cliché chick flicks that none of us would wanna see.

What were we talking about? Oh yeah. This was originally a British show, I believe. I'm not sure what that means for a "sketch comedy" show, frankly. I mean, it's SKETCHES! I mean, if you have a central PREMISE, sure. But if all you're doing is different sketches, how does that work? It'd be like if I cut a record that had absolutely NOTHING to do with The Beatles, then decided to call the song "Everybody's Got Something to Hide Except for Me and My Monkey", and started sending checks to Ono/McCartney. Maybe they're borrowing some kind of central concept that ties all the sketches together. I don't know. I think the name has changed, too. I think when I first heard about it, they were calling it "American Sketch Comedy".*

Would you believe it, this is actually another British show being ripped off. At least I imagine it is, it's got Lee Mack in it who did a show called 'The Sketch Show' over here in the UK for a while. Had some decent British comedians in it but overall really wasn't that funny.

Actually, the show was created with Lee AND Paul. They both share the same management team, Avalon. So technically, it's not a ripoff, it's really more expanding the show to the American audience with a different cast. The only reason I know this is because I used to work for Avalon here in LA.

I was under the impression that Avalon was a British comedy agent, pardon me if I was wrong. And thinking back the show wasn't that bad really, Jim Tavare was always a fine in standup, though Tim Vine was one of those guys who just gave a string of christmas cracker jokes for five minutes.

And there are plenty of half decent British comedians around these days, though you probably haven't heard of any of the ones I just mentioned. This would be a good time to mention that Simon Pegg and Edgar Wright just did a film called Shaun of the Dead that was fucking brilliant. Don't know if it will ever get a U.S. release mind you but it did very well over here and has got plenty of influential people rooting for it over there.

Oh and here's a first picture (I think) of the new cast:

You are not entirely mistaken...Avalon is a Brittish based Management/Production company. They hired a manager named Julie James (who manages Paul) to open the LA arm of their company in 2001. I don't know those comics you spoke of, I am mostly familiar with only the Avalon clients like Dave Gorman, Lee Mack, Stewart Lee, the guys that did the Boosh...etc.

I'm hoping this sketch show is successful...I'd like to see Paul really succeed with this...he deserves it.
